Eltel signs a 1.600 km optical fiber contract with Huawei

Eltel has signed a major contract in Ethiopia with Huawei Technologies, one of the leading telecommunication equipment providers in the African market.

The contract includes installation of approximately 1.600 km of OPGW (Optical Ground Wire) on existing power transmission lines. The installation will be carried out on live line conditions, for the first time in Ethiopia. The project is planned to be completed by end of 2015. Project areas are located in Central, Southern, South Western and Western parts of Ethiopia.

After the completion the new OPGW will enhance the utility’s internal communication capabilities, and it will also provide a high quality backbone for 3rd party users. The project is a part of a larger National Grid Development and Improvement Project in Ethiopia.

Eltel has tens of years of experience in delivering electrification projects in Sub-Saharan Africa, including Ethiopia. The group is currently delivering several projects in Africa, for example in Tanzania, Mozambique and Zambia.
